Jules Verne was born in 1828 in Nantes, a
city in western France. He moved to Paris in 1847 to study law
and, at the same time, to live a bohemian life that enabled
him to frequent the literary circles of his day. In 1863, he
published his first book, entitled Voyages extraordinaires
(Extraordinary Voyages). He subsequently devoted a large
part of his literary work to science fiction novels. In
1871, Jules Verne settled in Amiens, north of Paris. For more than thirty
years until his death, he would be an active citizen in
his adoptive city, a member of a great many local associations
and, starting in 1888 the date of his election
a conscientious local
councilor.
