Robert
Gérard, who joined the Caisse dEpargne Fédérée de la Moselle
in 1960 at the age of 17, rose to become the Director of this institution in 1973, the year he was
awarded a Masters degree in law by the University
of Strasbourg. Appointed Chairman of the Management Board of the Caisse
dEpargne de Moselle in 1985, he worked in favor of
the development of the French savings banks and, in 1992, was appointed
Chairman of the Management Board of the new Caisse dEpargne de
Lorraine Nord. Reelected to this position in 1997 and
2000, he contributed to the merger of the two Lorraine savings banks
in the summer of 2003, the year he retired from active life.
Robert Guérard demonstrated the same commitment at the
service of the savings banks in the various
positions he held at a national level during his
career with, in particular, his appointment to the Supervisory Board of
the Centre National des Caisses dEpargne (CENCEP) of
which he was a member from its creation in 1983 until
March 1992.
The Association for the History
of Groupe Caisse dEpargne has devoted one of its Cahiers pour
lhistoire (history notebooks) to Robert Guérard, entitled A
major figure from the Lorraine forty years dedicated to the
construction of Groupe Caisse dEpargne, a work that makes it
possible, through a series of interviews, to learn more about
this man who devoted his entire professional life to the
institution.
